Last day of lectures, really sad to be going back, although, I have been to talk to different people about doing a PhD here, so, all is not lost…fingers crossed if I get my grades etc etc I might be able to come back in 2015!
Lecture 1: Executive Function with Tobias Egner, PhD, Assistant Professor, Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, Psychology & Neuroscience, Arts & Sciences, DIBS Faculty, DIBS Investigator, Member, DIBS Center, D-CIDES Member
Covering what executive function is, the neural substrates in this regard and models of prefrontal cortex function. Luckily for me I have a fairly good knowledge of this from my time at University College Dublin! Great to find out the research literature surrounding this area.
Lecture 2: Neuroethics with Walter Sinnott-Armstrong, PhD, Chauncey Stillman Professor in Practical Ethics, Kenan Institute for Ethics, Philosophy, Arts & Sciences, DIBS Faculty, Member, DIBS Center, D-CIDES Member.
Fascinating lecturer on the neuroscience of ethics, followed by abnormal moral judgments by psychopaths, then moral responsibility and where it lies when a tumour is involved in the brain. Anything that makes the heat rise in a room due to differences in thought is always a good lecture!!
Lecture 3: Communication and Language with Richard Mooney, PhD. George Barth Geller Professor, Neurobiology, School of Medicine, DIBS Faculty, DIBS Investigator, Member, DIBS Executive Board.
Great lecture on communication and language, again, luckily for me I had a good knowledge in this regard as had a year of Linguistics in University College Dublin too!
Lunch: Went for a meeting to see Leonard E. White, PhD Associate Professor, Associate Professor, Duke Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development, Community & Family Medicine, Doctor of Physical Therapy Division, School of Medicine, DIBS Staff, DIBS Faculty. Excellent and extremely informative meeting, getting to know more and more what I need to do to get here! Very exciting altogether.
Lab: fMRI Lab two. Following on from yesterdays lab. Well, I have to admit on this occasion I really was lost. Here my only going into second year really came into play. Very good though, hands on approach which is always the best way to learn a subject like this. Will be incredibly useful to have sat in this for the future. Also got my brain scan back but have not worked out how to look at it properly yet!!
Dinner: Sat in on a debate on Altruism which was another interesting topic to be discussed! Pizza after.
PM: Off to quiz night at Fullsteam where I had a problem for not having the ‘right’ ID even though I am well and truly over 21!! Resolved only to go on to another bar to not be let in because I did not have my passport with me!! Seriously????? I had my drivers licence with my DOB on it and my Student Card from the UK with the same and both with photos…crazy, crazy ……and so….I had to go home! Not impressed, however, possibly best to sleep with a presentation to do tomorrow!!!
No photos today, nothing really to take in my labs today Not sure how my presentation will go tomorrow, a bit scared to be fair! ;)
